• Is sclerotherapy a painful procedure?

Sclerotherapy is based on the idea of combining the aesthetic and efficient treatment with the highest level of comfort. Using the proper needles and the right concentration by a doctor with high experience in this domain will offer a treatment with almost no pain.
• What are the substances used for sclerotherapy?

The substance and the concentration we use in each session depend on the severity of the case and its progression, in order to get the best results of the treatment maintaining the aesthetic part. But generally, the target of all the sclerosing agents is to close the vein by attacking in different ways its inner cellular layer (the venous endothelium). After that, these veins will be absorbed in time by the body.

• Generally, how many sessions are needed to complete the treatment?

The sessions` number depends a lot on some factors, some of them are from the patient`s side such as: the severity of the case, the patient`s co-operation with the doctor, etc., and some are from the doctor`s side, such as: his experience and his capacity to appreciate the disease`s point of evolution, and the best treatment plan to heal it, including mainly “the start point”, the best substance to use for the case he has in front, and of course, the right concentration. But generally, 5-6 sessions are needed for a complete treatment.

• How much time is needed for each session?

Well, each session takes about 25-40 minutes. It depends on the case we`re dealing with.

• After each session, do we need to use any medicine?

Usually, sclerotherapy is followed by some procedures in order to increase the treatment`s efficiency, such as: wearing the compression stockings, a daily program of 30 minutes (at least) walking, the elevated position of the legs when we sleep, etc. There is no strict indication of any medical treatment associated with the sessions. The only medicines that may be useful to increase the comfort after each session are those based on heparin.

• Can sclerotherapy treat big varicose veins?

The fact is that in the varicose veins treatment we have to pay a big attention on the venous diameter, so till a certain limit of diameter the answer for the question is YES; correctly done, using the right substance and concentration, and beginning from the right point of “start”, sclerotherapy could have fantastic results. But if the diameter is more than that, the treatment should be combined with surgical or thermal ablation procedures. After all, it depends on the doctor`s experience in evaluating the case and the best way to treat it.
